French Onion Dip | Cajun 911 Cuisine

appetizers cajun & creole classics comfort food entertaining holiday cajun cooking party dips
French onion dip made with red wine caramelized onions.

This Cajun 911 French onion dip is slow, rich, and deeply savory. Red wine–caramelized onions are cooked low and patient until jammy and sweet, then folded into a creamy base for a dip that’s bold, indulgent, and built for real flavor. This is not a shortcut dip — it’s a centerpiece appetizer made for gatherings, holidays, and anyone who appreciates old-school technique done right.

INGREDIENTS

Caramelized Onions

2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced

2 Tbsp butter

1 Tbsp olive oil

1/2 tsp salt

1/4 tsp black pepper

1/4 cup red wine

Optional: 1/2 tsp sugar for deeper caramelization

Creamy Base

8 oz cream cheese, softened

1 cup sour cream

1/2 tsp garlic powder

1/2 tsp onion powder

Salt and black pepper, to taste

Serve With

Kettle chips

French bread rounds

Crackers or fresh vegetables

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Caramelize the Onions

Heat butter and olive oil in a skillet over medium-low heat. Add onions, salt, and black pepper. Cook slowly, stirring often, for 30–40 minutes until deeply golden and jammy. If onions begin to stick, reduce heat slightly.

2. Deglaze with Red Wine

Add red wine to the pan and scrape up any browned bits. Simmer until the wine reduces completely and the onions are thick and glossy. Remove from heat and allow to cool.

3. Build the Creamy Base

In a bowl, combine cream cheese, sour cream, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix until smooth.

4. Fold in the Onions

Stir the cooled caramelized onions into the creamy base until evenly distributed. Taste and adjust seasoning.

5. Chill

Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving to allow flavors to develop fully.
